Boating Checklist

If your boat has been sitting around over the winter, it needs extra care before making a comeback this summer. As much as most of us, myself included, would like to get to our boats more often over winter, it rarely works out that way. The proper preparation and servicing of your boat will help prevent problems which could keep you in the marina this summer.

It is always a good idea to check on the manufacturer’s instructions for your vessel and systems fitted on it as they are all invariably different.

Engine and Fuel System

  • Generally Diesel fuel is fairly stable and nothing more than a top up may be required. If condensation and sludge deposits are a concern then many Fuel Additives are available which all claim various benefits. The choice of which one you use is up to you.
  • Inspect the fuel system and tanks for any signs of leaks and damage.
  • Check the engine/engines for damage including control cable connections, broken or loose wiring connections etc. The manufacturer’s handbook will provide a more detailed list relevant to your engine.
  • Check the steering is operational and, if fitted, the emergency steering works also.
  • Check the engine exhaust and ventilation systems are in good repair.
  • Check the seawater impellor is in good working condition and sea strainer is clear.
  • Check all fluid levels, including engine oil, hydraulic oil, power steering, power trim and coolant. Ensure you have adequate stock of extra fluids on-board.
  • Check all belts, cables and hoses for cracks, brittleness, swell and loose clamps.

Batteries

  • Check all batteries are in good condition.
  • Load test and carry out charging test.
  • Check all terminal connections and battery switches are in good condition and connections are tight.

Electrical Systems

  • Inspect all electrical components, wiring and connections for corrosion, wear and chafe.
  • Check all lighting including Navigation lighting and have spare bulbs on-board.
  • Check Bilge pump is operational and float switch functions correctly.
  • Check all pumps including Fresh Water, Deck wash and Toilet pumps are in good condition and operational and hoses and clamps are in good condition.
  • Check radios and GPS are working.

Ropes and Anchor

  • Check ropes and anchor chain/ropes are in good condition.
  • Check anchor shackles are in good condition and shackles are lock wired.
  • Ensure you have enough extra lines and fenders on-board if you intend to be rafting up.
  • Tow rope….. Just in case. A decent length of large diameter rope can come in handy should the need arise.

Safety Equipment

  • Lifejackets – Check lifejackets are in good working condition. If auto inflating type, check the cylinders are in date or serviced as required. Ensure there are enough jackets for potential passengers and they are of the correct size for their body weight.
  • Fire Extinguishers – Make sure all fire extinguishers are the correct size/type for your vessel. Check they are fully charged and in date.
  • Flare Kits – Check condition and expiry dates. Ensure you have the appropriate pack for your boating needs eg 2 day (smoke) and 2 night (flame). Ensure these are in a sealed container and in an easy to access location on your vessel.
  • EPIRB – Check expiration date.  Check your details are registered with the appropriate authorities.
  • First Aid Kit – A good first aid kit is essential for treating bumps, scrapes, burns and fishhook injuries.
  • Torch – A torch with spare batteries.
  • Communication – Two forms of communication are ideal. VHF plus Cell phone in a waterproof container/bag.
  • Ensure all persons on the boat understand and are familiar with the use and operation of all safety equipment on-board.

Giving your boat these checks could make a big difference to your boating experience this summer. Regular checks and maintenance of your boat and on-board equipment will help ensure safe and trouble free boating.

There are many checklists and other boating resources available, including online, such as the Maritime NZ and Coastguard NZ websites.
